Quite shocking, isn’t it. Although it sounds shocking, I do understand people’s fear of public speaking. At least I know I was terrified when I applied for TEDx… It felt simultaneously as the most stupid and the best decision I have ever made… Let me take you back to where this story began.
My journey to a TEDx talk
It’s 2018, a summer day, late afternoon time. I am sitting in the bus on my way to my hometown. Calling and chatting about all sorts of topics with my boyfriend at the time in Turkish, thinking nobody could understand me anyways.
Suddenly I hear a ladies voice behind me , Hi Elles! Nasil sen? (Turkish for how are you). Whoops, seems that our ‘secret’ language turned out to be not so secret;) It’s Tulay, a girl from my high school. She tells me how she and her sister are organizing a TEDx event and that she would love for me to apply for the auditions! While saying YES I WOULD LOVE TO! Thoughts like ‘me, a TEDx speaker? I haven’t given a presentation or speech since University (which was already 6 years ago at the time) !! How could I ever give a TEDx-talk?, what is even interesting about my story?!’’ All these doubts started popping up in my mind. Tulay gave me her number and while feeling excited and anxious at the same time, I told her I would contact her shortly after.
Time to upgrade that self-belief
Although I felt very excited, I also felt petrified even thinking about giving a TEDx speech. However intense those feelings were, I knew it was something that I HAD to do. I knew that the message I wanted to spread was something bigger than myself, and that a TEDx talk would help me immensely for future opportunities. I decided for myself that I had to learn how to break those old limiting beliefs and upgrade my self-belief around public speaking. This was a golden opportunity and I wasn’t going to throw it away. Besides that, I bought the TEDx book a couple of months before, thinking it would benefit me at some point in life… coincidence doesn’t exist, right?
Train your mind
Having travelled for 7 years as a fashion model, gave me a LOT of extra time on my hands. I like to joke that half of the modeling job is WAITING. Waiting for the bus to come, waiting in line for the casting, waiting in hair & make up, you name it.
In all those years, anytime I was waiting, I grabbed another self-help book. Absorbing everything. Reading all those self-help books gave me deep insights into how the mind works and how to influence it in a powerful way. I started to apply what I learned from the books. I started to train my mind on a daily basis to work for me instead of AGAINST me. Knowing that neuroscience shows that 95 % of our actions, habits and feelings stem from our subconscious mind, I knew that if I wanted to feel confident while giving the TEDx talk, I had to change my autopilot – I had to influence my subconscious on a deep level! It was time to upgrade my beliefs around public speaking! I took some time everyday to train my subconscious mind. Visualizing, affirmations, meditation, future gratitude journaling, you name it. And, IT WORKED! Because hey, even though I say it myself, the TEDx talk went pretty awesome:)
And it worked!
It really blew my mind. I realized that the way we view ourselves is so important. It influences the way you represent yourself. It influences your body posture, confidence, the way you speak and so many more things. So YES, change your thoughts, change your feelings and therefore change your actions and you will see different results.
I am not saying that every time you believe you can do something, it will happen. You need to put in the effort; mentally and physically.
Nevertheless, working on your negative thought patterns will undoubtedly give you life changing results. From my experience as a therapist and coach, I know that most people find it hard to reprogram their negative thought patterns by themselves.
